The top 10 lifestyle changes listed below are easy to follow and achieve, and could cut your cancer risk in half. Prevention is always the best method, and these tips are designed to get your body functioning optimally, reducing your breast cancer risk.
Reduce your sugar intake. Particularly fructose and highly processed sugars. Normalising your insulin and leptin levels by avoiding sugar and fructose is one of the most powerful physical actions you can take to lower your risk of cancer.
Optimise your vitamin D levels. Safe sun exposure is the most effective way to increase your vitamin D levels. To ensure safe sun exposure, it is best to avoid the sun between the hours of 10am to 4pm.
Practice intermittent fasting. Intermittent fasting will help your body shift to burning fat instead of sugar as its primary fuel. There are only two types of fuel; your body can burn carbs/sugar or fat. Since cancer cells thrive on sugar this is something you want to avoid.
Intermittent fasting involves timing your meals to allow for regular periods of fasting. To be effective, the length of your fast must be at least 16 hours. This means eating only between the hours of 12pm until 8pm, as an example. Essentially, this equates to simply skipping breakfast, and making lunch your first meal of the day instead.
Maintain a healthy body weight. Oestrogen is produced in fatty tissue, so loosing excess fatty tissue and maintaining a healthy weight is an excellent way of reducing your breast cancer risk.
Eat more high quality fat. Contrary to what you might have been told, high quality animal based fats containing omega-3’s are incredibly important to the body, and have been shown to reduce the risk of cancer.
Incorporate vegetable juice into your diet. Most of us are lacking in essential vitamins and minerals, as we are not consuming enough vegetables. Freshly made vegetable juice is an excellent way to incorporate more vegetables into your diet, to help your body preform optimally.
Watch out for excessive iron levels. This is actually very common once women stop menstruating. The extra iron actually works as a powerful oxidant, increasing free radicals and raising your risk of cancer. If your ferritin is elevated you can simply donate your blood to reduce it.
Reduce your alcohol intake. Alcohol intake should be limited to one standard drink a day.
Get proper sleep, both in terms of enough sleep, and sleeping between certain hours. According to Ayurvedic medicine, the ideal hours for sleep are between 10 pm and 6 am.
If you have children, breastfeed exclusively for up to six months. Research shows this can reduce your breast cancer risk, and the world health organisation recommends exclusively breast feeding for the first six months of your child’s life - it’s good for you and your children.
