Applied Kinesiology or AK is a post-graduate chiropractic technique developed by Dr. George Goodheart in 1964. AK uses bioenergetic feedback through testing the strength of various muscles in the body. This highly individualised, in-depth system of analysis, allows the doctor to assess various aspects of a patient’s state of health. This is an effective treatment system which focuses on whole body care.
A muscle that becomes inhibited under particular conditions, can indicate an imbalance of the body. The more obvious causes for muscle weakness include injury, pressure on the nerves or misalignment of the skeleton; however it can also be caused by nutritional deficiencies, food sensitivities, exposure to toxic substances, diseased or dysfunctional organs or emotional issues.
How Does It Work?
Muscle testing is used to ask the body questions and find out the root cause of a patient's symptoms. Wellington Chiropractors Sarena and Camille have a holistic approach to care. They find that AK is a powerful tool to accurately diagnose and restore health for their patients. Since becoming certified AK practitioners they have found that patients are healing from persistent injuries in a shorter time frame. AK treatments include things like Cranio-sacral therapy, Meridian therapy, nutritional deficiency analysis and restoring normal muscle tone with particular massage techniques. In conjunction to chiropractic adjustments, Sarena and Camille may advise particular stretches or exercises to promote healing; offer suggestions to help manage stress; or recommend dietary suggestions or nutritional supplements.
What You Can Expect
An initial appointment at Be Well involves questions about health, lifestyle and observations of posture and movement. At Be Well our Chiropractors find out which muscles are weak as a result of either "under firing" or being "over stimulated". The chiropractor will press gently down on your arm or leg, while you try to resist. They are simply looking to see if the muscle locks as it should. Each muscle should be able to contract and release for your body to function optimally. For example when you flex a knee the quadriceps should lengthen as the hamstring shortens to allow for joint movement. If there is an imbalance with these muscles one can easily injure them self playing sport or exercising. At Be Well your Chiropractor will pick up these imbalances and correct them to promote healing and prevent future injuries.
As a diagnostic technique Applied Kinesiology does not treat or offer a ‘cure’ for an illness but is used to suggest a number of complementary therapies. This allows patients to correct small health problems that may lead to larger ones affecting overall health. Muscle testing can reveal indirect sources of chronic symptoms, allowing the source to be treated, rather than the symptom, helping the body to heal itself. Feel free to message us if you have any questions about how AK can help you!

"Kinesiology is a technique that some people find hard to believe because it uses senses other than the eyes, the ears and the skin with which we are familiar as a means of perceiving our world. Yet the eyes are perceiving the wavelengths of light and the skin perceives pressure or temperature and the ears perceive wavelengths. All matter vibrates according to it's own recognisable wavelength and frequency. Kinesiology uses a muscle like our sight uses our eyes to perceive information."
